Walter Hunt invented the safety pin substantially as we know it today. His improved pin design included a clasp that covered the point and kept it from opening, and a circular twist at the bend to act as a spring and hold it in place. Hunt was born in upstate New York.

The World Record of ‘largest Safety Pin’ has been achieved by the De Young Museum in San Francisco, California, USA. Located on a walkway in the De Young Museum sculpture garden; this Twenty-One (21) feet tall safety pin attracts people to stand under the point of a giant pin.
